This is my first attempt at a photoblog. I have been doing self-taught photography for most of my life. I hope you like this effort. Please click on the photos for enlargements.

Tracy Arm, Alaska

One of the most (if not the most) astounding places in the entire state of Alaska. Walls rising over a thousand feet on either side of the arm, clouds drifting past like spectres. Only the sound of the ship and the waterfalls. Nature's catherdral. This photograph does not do it justice.

Blaze Busters in Action - Film at 11

Photojournalism is one of the aspects of photography that I love.
Fires are one of the primeval things that intrigue mankind. Put them both together and you get very interesting results. If this photo is a little blurry, it's because the explosion scared the heck out of me.

A sad anniversary

68 years ago today, at 10 minutes past 4 in the afternoon, the Honeymoon bridge collapsed when its support pillars, weakend by the massive ice jam from Niagara Falls, finally gave in. Photo was taken by my Great-aunt Winnifred Boddington.

Remembering the Universe Explorer

This is a photograph of my all-time, number 1 favourite cruise ship, The SS Universe Explorer.
Regrettably, it was broken up for scrap a year or so ago. I think of her every time I shave.
Good times, great people.

No Good Ever Comes From The Badlands

On close inspection, you'll know why they call them "badlands".

Pull to the right and stop

This is a paramedic unit and it's moving fast. When (or if) you see an emergency vehicle behind you or hear a siren, pull to the right and stop. That is the only way the people in those vehicles know that you have seen or heard them and you know they are there.
Dedicated to all the men and women who save lives for a living.

King & Queen Royal Visit to Canada 1939

My Great-Aunt Wynn took this photo of the King and Queen (the King is partially hidden but you can clearly see his face) on their first Royal Visit to Canada in May 1939. She left me a few amazing photos and I will post them on a semi-regular basis.

Agawa Canyon

I have spent several hours looking for this photograph. Once I found it, I wanted to post it right away. I love the moodiness of this photo.

Painted raindrops

Since photography means "painting with light", I did this during a rainstorm recently.

My commute to work

I have to look at this every day when I go to work. You have no idea how much I miss the contact, the interface with other drivers on the highway.
Poor me.

These magnificent humpbacks were photographed around Sitka, Alaska. We also went whale watching in Hawaii and the weather is much nicer there.

Leaving the title to you

I had trouble with the title for this one. "It's hot!" or "Fire!" seemed to be too obvious, so if you wish, insert your own title.

Boogie boarder

This was an amazing demonstration to watch. This kid was about 10 years old and he was just astounding on the boogie board at Wakiki beach.

World's Smallest Kid

This is a photo of Estevan Orlando. He is in the Guiness Book for being the smallest kid in the world.
He is shown sitting on a regular wooden lawn chair at an exhibition last summer to raise funds so he can have clothes specailly made to fit. He is only 44 mm or 17. 34 inches tall.

Ah - I'm kidding you. This is Jake sitting in an over sized chair at Toronto Island.

How many of you were going to donate?

Waiting for winter

There is a small conservation area north of my home and I frequent it several times a year. My favourite time is the fall when the leaves drop and are mixed into small eddies with pine boughs, snuggled against the rocks.

Emerald Lake Yukon Territory

One of the most beautiful lakes in the world. The colour comes from the sediment and the chemical make-up of the water. Interestingly, my grandmother took a very similar photo of this lake almost 50 years prior to me taking this one.

(Well I thought it was interesting)

Viet Nam Memorial Wall

To me, this is the most disturbing photograph that I have ever taken. I never realized how disturbing it was until I finished developing it in the darkroom. The first letters that jumped out at me were "son" and then the reflections on the wall took on ghost-like qualities. Maybe it's just my age or maybe I'm just reading too much into it. I'd appreciate your thoughts on it.

Nightbird

This is a weird photo. I never expected the reflection of the moon to do that to the lens. It struck me after the photo was developed that it looks like a strange craft or bird of some sort, so I call it "Nightbird". At least until someone comes up with something better.

Taku Glacier, Alaska

While zooming up this fog-covered glacier in a helicopter, the foremost thought in my mind was the really poor chance of surviving a chopper crash into those enormous rock-hard pillars of ice. It was a thrilling ride to say the least.

Ensenada Sunset

a man, a plan, a canal, panama

This may take some explaining. We entered the Panama Canal from the Pacific side at sunrise. Because the ithmus of Panama is so narrow and in the shape of the letter "S" plus the fact that we turned west to actually enter the locks, the photograph is a sunrise coming up behind us. With the impression that sun actually rose in the West.
Absolutley true story.

Plus - I love the palindrome in the title.

Photojournalism at its best

I always have a camera with me. Last summer, while I was driving home after work, I looked to my left and saw these cows. I quickly stopped the car and grabbed the camera. The cows just froze. One of them tried to hide her face and the other two just stood there with their mouths open. It was obvious they were embarassed to be caught....wearing cheap, plastic earrings.
Happy New Year!
